PRODUCT CARBON FOOTPRINT

Know where each product tonne of CO2e comes from.

Corporate inventories show where a company emits. A product carbon footprint follows one product through a defined lifecycle boundary and expresses its climate impact per declared or functional unit.

Who this service is for

01
Manufacturers receiving product-level carbon data requests

Provide customers with a transparent product-level result and documented boundary.

02
Exporters comparing product or plant routes

Compare production routes while keeping the unit, scope, allocation, and data quality visible.

03
Product teams evaluating design and material changes

Model how material, energy, logistics, use, or end-of-life choices change climate impact.

04
Businesses preparing data for EPD or verification programmes

Build the carbon calculation that may feed a separate programme, declaration, or assurance process.

01

What the number represents

The result is not simply the factory electricity divided by output. It depends on the chosen unit and boundary, the processes included, data quality, treatment of co-products and recycling, and the lifecycle stages relevant to the intended use.

ISO 14067 addresses the climate-change impact category. It allows a full or partial product carbon footprint, but the report must make the selected boundary and limitations clear. Offsetting is outside the quantification itself.

02

Where primary data changes the answer

Plant energy, fuel, process yields, scrap, recipes, bill-of-materials data, and actual logistics can distinguish one product or production route from an industry average. Supplier-specific data can improve the model further when its boundary and quality are compatible.

We record where secondary datasets or proxies are used so the business can prioritise the data improvements that would materially change confidence in the result.

03

How businesses use the model

A product footprint can support customer questionnaires, procurement decisions, low-carbon product development, hotspot reduction, and scenario comparison. It may also provide an input to an Environmental Product Declaration or assurance engagement, but Prakrti does not issue an EPD or act as the independent verifier.

What you receive

Clear outputs your team can use

  • 01Goal, intended use, boundary, and declared unit
  • 02Product system map and bill-of-materials model
  • 03Primary and secondary data register
  • 04Allocation, cut-off, and assumption log
  • 05Climate-impact result and hotspot analysis
  • 06Methodology report and update-ready model

How the engagement works

A practical, evidence-led process

  1. 01

    Define the question

Set the product, intended use, unit, lifecycle boundary, reporting period, comparison rules, and required standard or programme.

  2. 02

    Map the product system

Connect materials, energy, processes, co-products, transport, use, and end-of-life stages to appropriate data sources.

  3. 03

    Calculate and test

Apply documented emission factors, allocation methods, exclusions, data-quality checks, sensitivity analysis, and uncertainty notes.

  4. 04

    Report and maintain

Deliver the result, hotspot view, methodology, evidence trail, and a practical update method for future periods or scenarios.

Prepare for what is next

Product carbon data is moving into commercial decisions

Customers increasingly ask for emissions at product, material, or supplier level. A reusable model helps answer those requests consistently and shows which engineering or sourcing changes can reduce the result.

  • ISO 14040:2006

Questions businesses ask

Frequently asked questions

What is a product carbon footprint?

It is the sum of greenhouse-gas emissions and removals attributable to a product system within a defined lifecycle boundary, reported in CO2 equivalent for a specified functional or declared unit.

How is a product carbon footprint different from a corporate carbon footprint?

A corporate inventory accounts for emissions associated with an organisation over a reporting period. A product footprint follows a product system and allocates relevant lifecycle emissions to a defined unit of product.

Can a product footprint be cradle-to-gate?

Yes. ISO 14067 provides for partial product carbon footprints, which can cover selected lifecycle stages such as cradle-to-gate. The boundary, omitted stages, intended use, and limitations must be reported clearly.

Does ISO 14067 include carbon offsets?

ISO 14067 quantifies emissions and removals within the product system and treats climate change as the single impact category. Carbon offsetting is outside the scope of the product-footprint quantification.

Can Prakrti certify a product carbon footprint?

Prakrti develops the calculation, documentation, and evidence trail. Where a customer or programme requires independent verification or an EPD, that review or declaration is completed by the relevant approved external body.
